Why are we fundraising; who will help; what fundraiser will we choose? These 3 questions serve as the basis for any successful fundraiser. Your WHY will give your fundraiser purpose and your supporters a reason to give. Deciding WHO will help, stretches from your fundraising committee, sellers, and any other volunteers needed. Choosing WHAT fundraiser is best for your group to sell will be based on many factors (listed in the next section) and can make or break your fundraiser!
This is where you’ll determine individual seller targets based on your overall financial goal. You’ll also determine key dates for kick-off and collections, seller incentives, your list of volunteers, and identify any high-traffic selling locations. Use all the details from step 1 and step 2 to formulate your perfect parent-seller letter.
Whether you have a small or large group, make sure you have an excellent kick-off to build spirit and momentum. It’s a great idea to have your sellers memorize the perfect sales pitch and don’t forget to teach them how to fundraise safely. Promote your fundraiser throughout your community using local newsletters, radio and social media. Throughout the fundraiser, make sure you remind everyone of the purpose of your fundraiser, your expectations, and any exciting live results to keep them motivated.
Make sure you have reliable volunteers on hand to help you set-up and hand out product to sellers and parents. Have all parents sign-off on what product they received, to keep accounting and inventory under control. Make sure your sellers and supporters are given a big THANK YOU and informed of the final financial result and what it has allowed your group to accomplish.

If your team needs to raise $1,000 to $2,000, 50 cent lollipops are not necessarily your best choice. Ideally, find a product that’s a hot item and that has a higher selling price, so you can reach your goal more quickly.
If it ain’t, broke don’t fix it. Although sometimes, adding a new twist to an old proven fundraiser is a great way to boost sales. For example, instead of selling just cookie dough, sell cookie dough and muffin mix. However, if you’ve noticed a steady decline in your annual fundraising sales, it’s probably time to try something new!
$5, $10 or $20? Find a product that is priced perfectly and your sales will go through the roof! If you’re selling a $20 item and your supporters are hesitating, you’re losing a ton of potential fundraising dollars. Either they don’t feel they’re getting value for their money, or they’re simply not comfortable with dishing out $20 to support a local cause. Your price point depends highly on the economic status of your community, so be sure to consider it.
Candy and chocolate bar items are known as direct-sellers or cash-and-carry fundraisers. These items typically sell for 50 cents to $2 each. They often require up-front payment, but you can order as few as 1 case at a time. Order-Takers offer much more product selection, items sell from $5 to $25, and require no cost to get started. You collect all your orders and money up-front from your supporters, and then place your final order with your fundraising provider. Which fits your group best?
Make sure the product you choose to sell is a quality product. If your supporters feel they’re getting good value, they’ll be generous next time you come knocking! Girl Guide cookies are an excellent example. Build your customer base by offering excellent quality and value, and you’ll have yourself your annual trophy fundraiser.
Speak to other coaches to find out which product fundraisers are working and which aren’t, and what items are the hottest sellers. Inform yourself about any creative ideas they’re using to generate sales, and what they’re doing to motivate their sellers.
The percentage profit offered to your group is equally important to the quality of product you’ll be selling. The ultimate is to be selling a quality product, at an acceptable price, with a solid percentage profit for your group. Depending on the product, your profit could vary from 25% to 90% profit, so make sure you do a percentage profit comparison between companies. Remember, you’re better off selling a quality product and making 40%, than a lousy product and making 50%. Also, make sure you consider shipping and other fees when making your comparisons.

"Our amazing boys stepped up to the plate and raised $2330. This will pay our new uniforms, our main tournament and end of year party! BTW, everyone really loves the candles. Thank you so much for your help from beginning to end. Go Tribe!"
Melanie, Simi Tribe Baseball Team, Simi Valley California
"I was impressed with JustFundraising’s customer service and having my own personal fundraising assistant. Friendly and helpful assistance was given from start to finish. Our cookie dough fundraiser was a huge success, with a profit of $9500. Everyone loved the cookie dough, and they are looking forward to doing it again next year!"
Lisa Ruquet, Long Island Sharks Football
"Our volleyball team wrapped up our fundraiser on January 13 and made a net profit of $12,854. Our girls range from 11 to 22 years old, and we had 94 out of the 164 sellers participate. Whatever each girl raised went into their personal bank account to help pay their way to the Nationals this year, so that was a great motivator."
