“I am an advocate for suicide awareness/prevention. You see, before Sept 2009 I was living my life and suicide was never a thought or fear in my life, until I lost my youngest son Tory.
I’ve learned that not every death by suicide is a prolonged mental illness, my son was outgoing, popular and loved by many (we never saw this coming), there were no signs at all. He is gone and we were left behind to wonder what could I have done, why didn’t I see something was wrong, these are all feelings of guilt loved ones are left to deal with.
Suicide can sometimes cause a domino effect, those left behind are left to deal with loss and PTSD after finding your loved one and feeling alone with the loss because this is such a taboo subject. My other son Paul dealt with the PTSD and depression after finding his brother. His fight for life ended on Oct 17,2013 when he decided he could not live with the nightmares, pain and depression any longer. My efforts to get him help were not successful. So many people will not get the help they need because of the stigma for those seeking mental health care. This needs to change!
You see suicide is now at the forefront of my thoughts on a daily basis. The fact that many families can be spared my pain, raising awareness of services that can save lives, ending the stigma so that many more can seek help. These are things I push forward to accomplish, I hope to continue to work with AFSP to lower the number of lives lost by suicide each year.”
